Brian F. Reynolds star athlete, Lowell business leader; 66

HAMPTON, N.H. -- Brian F. Reynolds, 66, a member of the Lowell High School Athletic Hall of Fame and a former prominent member of the city's business community died Saturday, May 15, at Seacoast Health Center, after a brief illness.

He was born on June 10, 1932, in Lowell, a son of the late James H. "Cap" and Agnes (O'Sullivan) Reynolds.

He graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1950. He was one of the early inductees into the Lowell High School Athletic Hall of Fame, as one of the school's most outstanding student-athletes, having won nine varsity letters in three sports. His football career coincided with the beginning of the Coach Ray Riddick era when Lowell went to two bowl trips. He scored 102 points in 1949. He was named All-Scholastic by all three Boston newspapers and was an honorable mention high school All-American. He was also All-Scholastic in track and field and held a school high jump record of 6-foot, 1-inch, for nearly 40 years. He also captained the Lowell High baseball team.

A graduate of Harvard College, Class of 1954, Mr. Reynolds started on both the football and track and field teams for three years and scored the winning run in a baseball game with Yale. At graduation, his Harvard classmates elected him to the 14-person permanent Class Committee.

After serving in the Army, he moved to New York City and spent nearly a decade with Chase Manhattan Bank. Returning to his native Lowell in 1968, he spent over 25 years as the business manager for The Lowell Sun. He was a director of BayBank Middlesex of Burlington and the Central Savings Bank of Lowell, a corporator of the Lowell Boys Club, a trustee of the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Harvard Club of Boston, served on many Harvard boards and committees, and was a member of Vesper County Club. Upon retirement, he move to Hampton, N.H to be close to the ocean he loved.

Mr. Reynolds is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Brian F. and Carol (Tully) Reynolds of Dunstable, Mass.; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail F. (Reynolds) and Gary A Frank of Tampa, Fla.; his former wife, Florence Irene (Berard) Reynolds of Lowell; three grandchildren, Andrew Brian, Emily and Catherine Reynolds of Dunstable, Mass.; two sisters, Jaqueline (Reynolds) Mahoney of Northhampton, N.H. and Patricia (Reynolds) Cawley of Lowell; two brothers, John M. Reynolds of Keene, and Richard P. Reynolds of Pompano Beach, Fla.; 63 nieces and nephews and their spouses, and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his fiancee, June L. Bean of Hampton, NH.

He was the brother of the late James Reynolds Jr., of Lowell.
