WINNER of the 2003 AWARD:

ETHAN BROWN

 Our winner in 2003 is Ethan Brown. Ethan met our standards of being a top scholar, with his excellent grades, high class rank, honor roll and National Honor Society membership.

Ethan is also an excellent athlete, being a member of the cross-country, track and swim teams. He won numerous awards for his results and was recognized as a top scholar-athlete by the Boston newspapers.

He was the Cross Country Team MVP, the MVC Conference "Runner of the Year", and Cross Country and Swim Team Captain. He place 4th in 2 events in the state swimming championship, and 3rd at the Cross Country state championships. He also broke 4 LHS swimming records and the LHS Cross-Country Course record.

Ethan writes:

  • “I feel there is a direct correlation between hard work and good performance in these sports (distance running and swimming) more so than others...I feel that sports other than swimming and running don't require the mental toughness and hard, monotonous training that is involved in these two sports...Most of all, I think that if you stay dedicated to these sports the results are shown in all other aspects of your life. You're consistent in everything you do and you always focus on the best quality work no matter what task you are trying to accomplish."

Coach Philip Maia writes of Ethan:

  • “...His hard work, enthusiasm and leadership...His enthusiasm is next to none. He knew what had to be done, and he followed the progress of his competition. As our team captain, he would make sure everyone felt welcome and part of our success."
     
  • "Ethan is an exemplary student-athlete. He excels in the classroom as well as on the playing field. He is one of the very best in his sport....3rd at All-State...Boston Globe all-Scholastic Cross-Country Team (the only student athlete from Lowell High this fall),,,Boston Herald All-Scholastic team...Lowell Sun "Runner of the Year". Ethan is a great representation of Lowell High School. We are very proud of him. "

The Scholarship is overseen and administered by the Greater Lowell Community Foundation, a wonderful non-profit organization set up to benefit the city. It oversees many of the Lowell High scholarship funds. We are very grateful to them for all their help and support.
